Batteries power our laptops, cell phones, vehicles, and even our hoverboards! But there’s a limit to how much heat they can generate, and still operate safely. Those limits are being established by Purdue’s Amy Marconnet and her team at MTEC (Marconnet Thermal and Energy Conversion lab). By dissecting lithium-ion cells, they are testing the thermal properties of each battery element at the microscopic level — helping to ensure that the batteries of the future will be both safe and powerful.
