This online system, SPLASH (Student Prior Learning Assessment System Helpdesk), simplifies and speeds up the assessment process by providing students with upfront information and guidance for their required documentation. For faculty members, SPLASH provides consistency in documentation requirements and a place to view the submissions. This project ensured consistency and transparency in CIT’s processes in identifying, evaluating, and awarding prior learning credit in computer information technology. It also created a highly scalable PLA program for new and future students interested in completing CIT degrees and provides easily exported learning outcome data with documentation for recurring ABET accreditation activities.

Implementing Collision Prevention for Objects in a JS Plugin

A local organization offers different, rentable facilities for special occasions, such as wedding receptions and business-related events. Previous students created a plugin that allowed users to create custom-made floorplans online. This was done by a “drag-n-drop” menu where users could arrange tables and chairs on a floorplan of their choice to meet their event needs. Additionally, previous work on this plugin included creating “non-drop zones,” which prevented users from dropping objects on walls and fireplaces. However, there was nothing to prevent the furniture from colliding and overlapping. After researching and testing, the solution to this problem was JQuery’s UI Draggable Collision (UIDC) plugin. Over 4500 lines of code were reviewed and dissected, and the UIDC solution was successfully implemented. Now, objects in the floorplan won’t collide. Another accomplished task was to insert newly-designed images into the code of the plugin. Project Student: Thomas Wilson

Living Lab Rebranding

Living Lab administrators requested an updated logo to represent the Living Lab. The administrators requested that the logo exemplify a transformation in students as well as an association with technology. The logo needed to include Purdue colors to match up with their media kit. The project began with a portal design and ultimately ended up with a doorway design with two students entering and leaving as young professionals equipped with the skills necessary to begin their careers in the IT field. University Course Website

The administrator had asked for an update of the university course website. They specifically requested visual improvements to the main home page. The implemented changes included a dynamic picture banner, changed layout, and some removed sections of the home page. Project Student: Michael Nguyen

Render Farm Project

The purpose of the Render Farm Project was to create a high speed graphics rendering network. This was accomplished by using multi-core computing nodes to compile graphics information at high speeds while the overall work load is managed by a separate system. This process was aided by the use of Autodesk software, including Maya for graphics management and Back Burner for workload management. CIT students then had access to high-speed, 24-hour rendering to assist them with project completion Being able to render more data faster will continue to allow students to create more complex projects and greatly assist them with time management. This solution can be expanded upon by adding additional servers or systems to the network that operate as nodes to increase the render farms overall performance. Interactive Multimedia Project for Local Hospital

A local hospital commissioned the Living Lab to produce an interactive multimedia presentation for patients. The presentation required a metric for recording quiz results and had to adhere to client limitations. Additionally, they had mentioned a potential grant opportunity to help facilitate faster module production. Adobe Captivate, alongside Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and Premier Pro was used to produce this presentation. The back-end included MySQL to monitor the quiz results database and as an interface for the results and login IDs for the patients. Some presentation features include audio readings, animations played when a button is pressed, and scored quizzes to track the patient’s knowledge acquisition. Pending grant approval, the project will either be delegated to future Living Lab interns or put into the hands of a private contractor with the assistance of the grant to fund it.
