Energy & Emissions

Purdue University is dedicated to advancing sustainable energy solutions across campus. From exploring small modular nuclear reactor technology to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the university pursues innovative ways to meet its energy needs responsibly. These efforts include efficient utilities generation, proactive energy management and ongoing building repair and rehabilitation projects — all aimed at improving performance and reducing environmental impact.

Energy Generation

Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Studies

Home to one of the nation’s top nuclear engineering programs and a national leader in energy innovation that is scalable and sustainable, Purdue and its experts are uniquely qualified to study small modular and advanced reactor technology.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Administrative Operations is responsible for tracking and managing Purdue University’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The university’s greenhouse gas emission data since fiscal year 2011 is shown in an online interactive chart broken down by direct and indirect emissions.

Utilities Generation

Energy and Utilities supplies and distributes steam, chilled water and electricity to Purdue University in West Lafayette via the Wade Utility Plant and the Northwest Chiller Plant.

Energy Consumption

Energy Management

Purdue’s ongoing efforts to manage and conserve energy include monitoring building energy use through building-level meters to identify abnormal or high consumption, retro-commissioning to improve existing building systems and Energy Conservation Action Days.

Building Repair and Rehabilitation

Capital Asset Management (CAM) staff oversee the Repair and Rehabilitation (R&R) program for academic and administrative buildings and infrastructure at Purdue University in West Lafayette. The R&R program focuses on addressing long-term maintenance of existing structures.
