Purdue students encouraged to apply for open position on Indiana Commission for Higher Education
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) has formed a nominating committee to identify candidates to serve as a student commissioner.
The term for current student commissioner and Purdue University senior Keith S. Hansen ends in June. Students from any Purdue campus with at least two years of enrollment remaining are encouraged to apply for the position.
Working closely with public and independent colleges and universities, ICHE coordinates planning and budgeting for higher education in Indiana. Some of the traditional responsibilities of the commission are:
* to plan and coordinate Indiana's state-supported system of post-high school education, taking into account the plans and interests of independent colleges and universities;
* to define the educational missions of public colleges and universities;
* to review both operating budget and capital budget appropriation requests from public institutions;
* to approve or disapprove for public institutions the establishment of any new branches, campuses, extension centers, colleges or schools;
* to approve or disapprove for public institutions the offering of any additional associate, baccalaureate or graduate degree or certificate program of two semesters or more in duration;
* to review all programs of public institutions and make recommendations to the governing board of the institution, the governor and the General Assembly concerning the funding and disposition of these programs; and,
* to review the budget requests of the State Student Assistance Commission.
Applications for the position of student commissioner are available online at https://1.usa.gov/wuugvg and are due no later than 11:59 p.m. March 16. Applications will be screened by the nominating committee, which is composed exclusively of student representatives from each of the seven publicly funded state institutions. The position is ultimately appointed by the governor.
Brad Krites, a first-year MBA student in the Krannert School of Management and Fort Wayne native, is representing Purdue on the search committee.
"This is an unparalleled opportunity for students to play an active role in helping shape and define higher education at the state level. The student commissioner on the ICHE is the advocate and voice of the over 400,000 students enrolled around the state," Krites said. "Purdue has a vibrant history of strong student representation, and I urge students from each of Purdue's campuses to apply."
