University places fraternity on probation
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue officials on Wednesday (July 28) announced that Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity has been placed on probation for violating university regulations and Interfraternity Council Risk Management policies.
A university investigation concluded that Delta Sigma Phi hosted an unregistered party in April where alcohol was served to minors. The sanction will extend through Dec. 15, said Pablo Malavenda, associate dean of students.
"We're clear on our rules concerning alcohol, and we expect our fraternities and sororities to know and follow these guidelines," Malavenda said. "This fraternity will participate in an educational program and will have to show that it is meeting certain standards, and we'll work with it along the way."
In order to maintain university recognition, the fraternity may not host or co-sponsor functions at which alcohol is served until Oct. 31. In addition to completing alcohol education programs, the fraternity also must participate in leadership activities.
Malavenda noted that the fraternity and national organization were cooperative throughout the investigative process.
