Purdue University formalized three partnerships with three Malaysian universities in November. The partnership agreements focus on developing Malaysia’s semiconductor and artificial intelligence workforce and strengthening Purdue’s global impact in high-demand technology sectors.
The partnerships were formalized during a delegation visit to Malaysia led by Dimitrios Peroulis, Purdue’s senior vice president for partnerships and online, and Victory Soe, Purdue’s senior director of global online partnerships and strategic initiatives. Peroulis said these new partnerships are a boon to both Purdue and the Malaysian universities, which are focused on preparing Malaysia’s workforce to step into fast-growing technological fields.
“These partnerships represent a powerful step in the future of global technology,” Peroulis said. “By combining Purdue’s proven strengths in artificial intelligence, data science and semiconductor manufacturing with the vision of our Malaysian partners, we’re helping prepare a highly skilled workforce while expanding opportunities for collaborative research and innovation.”
The partnership agreements formalized during the visit include:
- A partnership between Purdue and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) for the collaborative delivery of a dual master’s in AI and data science. Purdue’s ABET-recognized AI microcredentials have also been incorporated into UTAR’s undergraduate programs.
- A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Purdue and Universiti Teknologi Petronas that focuses on offering microcredentials and professional upskilling opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing, data science and engineering-related fields.
- An MOU between Purdue and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). In a Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education event, Purdue and USM, with support from semiconductor manufacturing company Intel, agreed to participate in joint research and training opportunities that bolster Malaysia’s national semiconductor initiative, including the establishment of an advanced semiconductor research laboratory.
Through these partnerships, Purdue is expanding its global reach and supporting Malaysia’s growing semiconductor industry. According to Soe, partnerships like these extend Purdue’s mission by advancing the development of critical technological infrastructure in Southeast Asia and connecting more learners worldwide with Purdue’s renowned engineering and technology programs through online learning.
“Global online partnerships like these are essential to advancing education and innovation at scale,” Soe said. “By working closely with leading Malaysian universities, we can share expertise, expand access to high-quality learning, and create pathways that empower learners and industries worldwide.”
