Remember to practice proper recycling procedures

All members of the campus community are encouraged to follow Purdue’s recycling procedures to ensure proper waste management. The sustainability department offers a comprehensive recycling program to reduce the environmental impact of campus operations.

Here’s a quick refresher on what can be recycled on campus:

  • Mixed paper: Office paper, newspaper, flyers and notebook paper can all be recycled. If it tears and reveals fibers, without any film, it’s recyclable. Please note that shredded paper should be placed exclusively in the green, mixed paper carts. Unshredded paper can be placed in the blue confidential carts to be sent off to shred.
  • Cardboard: Flattened cardboard boxes are accepted. Parts of pizza boxes that have any food or grease should be placed in the landfill bin.
  • Plastic bottles, jugs and jars: Only empty bottles, jugs and jars are recyclable. Any type of plastic or plastic-lined paper cups should be placed in the landfill bin.
  • Aluminum and steel cans: Make sure they are empty before recycling.

Please remember to keep the following nonrecyclable items out of recycling bins to avoid contamination:

  • Food waste and food containers: any leftover food, dirty containers or plastic bags.
  • Soft and multilayer plastics: chip bags, candy bar wrappers, plastic wraps, etc.
  • Cups: paper and plastic cups, including Styrofoam should not be recycled.
