Computation, modeling and simulation practices are common in the STEM workplace, yet formal training embedded in disciplinary practices is not as standard in the undergraduate classroom. “Teaching and Learning in STEM With Computation, Modeling, and Simulation Practices: A Guide for Practitioners and Researchers” gives instructors a handbook to ensure their curriculum bridges the gap between the classroom and workplace by equipping students with computational skills and preparing them for a rewarding career in STEM. Grounded in theory and supported by 15 years of education research at the undergraduate level, this book provides instructional, pedagogical and assessment guidance for integrating modeling and simulation practices into the undergraduate classroom. 

About the Purdue author

Alejandra Magana is the W.C. Furnas Professor in Enterprise Excellence and professor of engineering education. In 2022 Magana was inducted into the university’s Teaching Academy, and she received the Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2021. She also received the Purdue University Seeds for Success Award in 2023.

Her research interests include identifying how computational model-based reasoning can effectively support STEM disciplinary practices. In 2015 Magana received the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award for investigating modeling and simulation practices in undergraduate engineering education.
