7 Purdue students receive new Stamps Scholarships
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Seven of Purdue University's top first-year students will receive tuition and education assistance for the next four years thanks to Stamps Scholarships.
The Stamps Scholarships, which are from the Penny & Roe Stamps Scholars Foundation, are available at Purdue for the first time this year.
"This program is an incredible opportunity for some of our most successful students because it supplements the university's Trustees Scholarships," said Jessica Kasmerchak, senior assistant director for the Office of Admissions. "In addition to the monetary award, the Stamps Scholars will have access to an enrichment fund which will assist in covering expenses for opportunities related to the students' studies, such as conferences, seminars, study abroad programs and internships."
At Purdue, students from Indiana who receive the Trustees Scholarship would receive $10,000, and out-of-state students would receive $12,000 to $16,000 for up to four years. The Stamps Scholarship supplements the award by matching the university's scholarship for up to four years.
This year's recipients are:
* Allison Fifer, from West Terre Haute, Ind. Studying first-year engineering.
* Alice Grasso, from Albany, Ind. Studying first-year engineering.
* Robert Wilson, from Odon, Ind. Studying biology.
* Jenée Christensen, from Beavercreek, Ohio. Studying first-year engineering.
* Haefa Mansour, from Mentor, Ohio. Studying first-year engineering.
* Anne Rodino, from Owego, Ill. Studying prepharmacy.
* Kristen Leenerman, from Broomfield, Colo. Studying first-year engineering.
Students for the scholarship are selected based on a pool of the highest achieving high school seniors who were admitted by mid-December. These students are identified by the Office of Admissions and are then invited to complete an application that is used for selection by the Stamps Scholars and Beering Scholarship programs. The Beering award covers full educational expenses for a bachelor's degree and the opportunity to pursue two other graduate degrees at the university. Applications are reviewed by a committee, which decides who will be offered the scholarships.
