College of Engineering to honor distinguished alumni
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's College of Engineering will honor 10 distinguished alumni on Friday (Feb. 25).
"These alumni represent the highest ideals of the College of Engineering," said Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering. "They are accomplished and inspiring, and they have taken on the task of improving our world."
The 2011 Distinguished Engineering Alumni, who are being honored as part of National Engineers Week, are:
* Raymond Cohen of Valparaiso, Ind., the Herrick Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1947, a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1950 and a doctorate in 1955.
* William N. Dudley of McLean, Va., president and chief operating officer of Bechtel Group Inc. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1974.
* Barry M. Epstein of Dallas, president of EcoStatic Systems LLC. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1961 and a master's degree in electrical engineering in 1963.
* N. Wayne Hale Jr. of Friendswood, Texas, retired space shuttle program manager and flight director with NASA. He earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1978.
* Thomas L. Maxwell of Lebanon, Ohio, general manager of military propulsion engineering with GE Aviation. He earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautics and astronautics in 1969.
* Gary E. Payton of Fairfax Station, Va., retired deputy under secretary of the Air Force and former astronaut. He earned a master's degree in aeronautics and astronautics in 1972.
* Edward M. Schreck of Winnetka, Ill., retired chief information officer for Accenture. He earned a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering in 1971.
* David R. Schwind of Pacifica, Calif., senior vice president of Charles M. Salter Associates Inc. He earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary engineering in 1974.
* Edward G. Tiedemann Jr. of Concord, Mass., senior vice president of engineering and Qualcomm Fellow with Qualcomm Inc. He earned a master's degree in electrical engineering in 1977.
* Ellen E. Tobias of West Lafayette, Ind., vice president of Elanco Animal Health Manufacturing, a division of Eli Lilly and Co. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1983.
