Purdue College of Science honors distinguished alumni
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University College of Science honored 10 distinguished science alumni during an April 16 ceremony.
The 2010 honorees are:
* L. Celeste Bottorff of Decatur, Ga., who is vice president of Living Well for Coca-Cola North America in Atlanta. Bottorff started her career in accelerator operations at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and has served as senior vice president of strategy and marketing for AHL Services Inc., marketing director for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and director of global planning for Intercontinental Hotels. She is a board member for Caraustar Industries, HireDynamics Inc. and the Cystic Fibrosis Reaching Out Foundation and has served on both Purdue's Science Alumni Board and the Dean's Leadership Council. Bottorff received a bachelor's degree in physics in 1975.
* Andrew J. Feustel of Houston, who is a mission specialist at NASA. Last May, Feustel served on the crew of STS-125 Atlantis, the final space shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, and is assigned to the crew of STS-134 to the International Space Station. He has worked as a geophysicist for the Engineering Seismology Group and Exxon Mobil Exploration Co. Feustel received bachelor's and master's degrees in earth and atmospheric sciences in 1989 and 1991.
* David U. Himmelberger of Mountain View, Calif., who is CEO and managing director of Health Outcomes Group, an international medical consulting group specializing in patient-reported outcomes, quality of life and economic evaluation. Before founding Health Outcomes Group, he worked at Syntex Corp. as director of worldwide market research and strategic planning. He began his career as a biostatistician at Stanford University Medical School. Himmelberger received a master's degree in statistics in 1972.
* Thomas "Curtis" Holmes Jr. of Dallas, who is president and CEO of Texert Inc. Holmes has served as vice president of the Intelligent Network product group for AT&T and as president and CEO of MetaSolv Software Inc. He also served on the board of directors for Elanti Systems and Tango Networks. Holmes received a master's degree in computer science in 1986.
* Florence L. Juillerat of Lebanon, Ind., who is a retired professor of biological sciences. Juillerat served as a public school teacher in New York and Indiana and as a biology instructor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She received the Indiana University President's Award for Teaching, the Distinguished Service Award from the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers and the Four-Year College Biology Award for Excellence in Teaching from the National Association of Biology Teachers. Juillerat received a bachelor's degree in biological sciences in 1962, a master's in biological education in 1967 and a doctorate in cell biology in 1974.
* William R. Landwer of Houston, who is chief geophysicist for Kerns Petroleum Inc. Landwer invented the subsea Shear-Component Underwater Impeller Diverter, a generating mechanism for a subsea hydrocarbon reservoir monitor, gas hydrates farming and strength-of-materials testing. Landwer received a master's degree in earth and atmospheric sciences in 1977.
* Sally K. Mason of Iowa City, Iowa, who is president of the University of Iowa. Mason was Purdue's first female provost. She has served as chair of the advisory committee to the National Science Foundation Directorate for Education and Human Resources and as a member of the executive committee of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. President George W. Bush appointed Mason to the National Medal of Science Selection Committee for two terms from 2006-2011. Mason received a master's degree in developmental biology in 1974.
* William E. Moore of Baton Rouge, La., who is the Southern University System Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. Moore also served as chemistry department chair at Southern University Baton Rouge. He was a charter member of the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission and a special adviser to the precollege programs in the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health. He also has given an invited lecture at Pasteur Institute in Paris. Moore received a doctorate in physical biochemistry in 1967.
* Arthur F. Powell of Warren, N.J., who is president and CEO of Powell Capital Markets Inc. Powell served as president and was founder of AGH Financial Corp. and has been associated with Intel Corp., the Data Processing Division of IBM Corp., and the Missile and Space Division of General Electric Co. He was vice chair and founder of the New Jersey Development Authority for Small Business, Minorities and Women's Enterprises and a former member of the South Carolina State University Board of Visitors. Powell received a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1966.
* Edward R. Shugart of Winston Salem, N.C., who is vice president of Actuarial Management Resources Inc. in Winston-Salem. Shugart served as senior vice president and chief actuary of Integon Life Insurance Corp. and as president and COO of Investment Life Co. of America. Shugart received a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1963.
