Appointments, honors and activities
• Appointments and promotions:
- Rosalee Clawson, professor of political science, has been named head of the Department of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts. Clawson is known for her work in American politics, especially public opinion, mass media and politics, political psychology, and the politics of race, class and gender. Her appointment is effective July 1.
• Faculty and staff honors:
- An essay by Daniel Aldrich, an associate professor of political science, was selected as a winner in the USAID Frontiers in Development essay contest. His article, "The Need for Social Science and Development in Countering Violent Extremism," will be featured in a publication to coincide with the USAID Frontiers in Development conference in June. Aldrich is currently a fellow in the Mansfield Foundation U.S.-Japan Network for the Future and at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C.
- Susan Curtis, professor of history and director of American Studies, has been appointed the Maxwell C. Weiner Distinguished Visiting Professor of History at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. She will be in residence at the university during the spring semester of 2013. (APN)
-Linda Chezem, professor in the department of youth development and agricultural education in the College of Agriculture, has been appointed to the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The council advises the secretary, the director of the National Institutes of Health and the director of the NIAAA on program and policy matters, offers recommendations on research conducted at NIAAA, and reviews applications for grants and cooperative agreements.
• Notables:
- Purdue University is one of eight Indiana organizations to receive the 2012 Governor's Workplace Safety Award for advancing occupational safety and health. The awards are a partnership among government, business and safety leaders, including the Indiana Department of Labor, on behalf of the Governor, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers. Purdue was recognized for innovations in a general industry by a large company.
• Student honors:
- Keith Hansen, a senior studying biomedical engineering, was named intern of the year for his work at the Statehouse during the 2012 legislative session. Hansen is a Senate legislative intern with the offices of state Sens. Dennis Kruse and Ryan Mishler. The Intern of the Year Award is given to students who show a positive attitude, strong work ethic, effective interpersonal skills, reliable attendance record, academic achievement and outstanding performance of all intern duties. Hansen has received a $3,000 scholarship from Verizon Wireless.
