Purdue researcher tapped for U.S. energy, climate fellowship
Suresh Garimella
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Suresh V. Garimella, Purdue's R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, has received a senior fellowship for the U.S. State Department's Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA).
As a senior fellow, he will promote ECPA, a regional partnership announced by President Barack Obama at the April 2009 Summit of the Americas, to address issues including clean energy, energy security, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental matters. Fellows are scheduled to visit countries in the Western Hemisphere through U.S. embassies and program implementers.
"You are now part of this elite cadre of experts that will serve as short-term consultants to governments in the region on everything from policy to program design," Kevin Sullivan, director of the Office of Economic Policy and Summit Coordination at the State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, said in a letter to Garimella.
Individual fellow assignments for missions overseas typically range from three to five days.
"I'm honored and excited to be invited to help our partner countries address their energy and environmental challenges," Garimella said.
In addition to speaking engagements and meetings with governments and academia, senior fellows work in an outreach capacity and are called upon for interviews by print and broadcast media.
Garimella has co-authored more than 450 refereed journal and conference publications, edited or contributed to several books and has been recognized with various research and teaching awards.
Last year he received a Jefferson Science Fellowship from the U.S. Department of State, where his expertise and insights are helping guide U.S. foreign policy. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and recipient of the ASME's Heat Transfer Memorial Award in 2010. Garimella earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1985 from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University in 1986 and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989.
He recently was named Associate Vice President for Engagement at Purdue.
