Appointments, honors and activities

• Appointments and promotions:- Vladimir Shalaev, the Bob and Anne Burnett Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named scientific director for nanophotonics at the Birck Nanotechnology Center. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2010 Max Born Award of the Optical Society of America, the 2010 Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics, the 2009 Herbert Newby McCoy Award for the top research contribution from Purdue, and the 2006 Top 50 Nano Technology Award. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America and the International Society for Optical Engineering.
- Amanda Dunkle has been appointed director of development for Purdue Convocations. Dunkle joined Purdue Convocations in 2007 as donor relations coordinator and has over 10 years of experience in development. She held previous positions at the St. Vincent Foundation in Indianapolis, the Saint Thomas Foundation in Nashville and at Verizon Wireless Music Center. She received her bachelor's degree in music business and vocal performance at Butler University.
• Alumni honors:
- Kara Mitchell-Flynn, who graduated this spring from the School of Veterinary Medicine, has received the Proficiency in Emergency and Critical Care Award from the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. The award, which is sponsored by Abbott Animal Health, acknowledges her aptitude in critical care, as well as her active participation in the local chapter of the Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. As a winner, Mitchell-Flynn will be recognized in the October issue of the society's journal and will receive a $700 cash stipend along with complimentary membership in VECCS for 2011 and 2012.
• Student honors:
- Andrew O'Bannon, a senior from Pittsboro, Ind., who is studying mechanical engineering, has been selected by the German Academic Exchange Service to serve as a Young Ambassador for study in Germany for the 2011-12 academic year. In this position, O'Bannon will encourage other students to take advantage of similar study abroad opportunities. He also will participate in a training session this August.
