Appointments, honors and activities
• Appointments and promotions:
- Three College of Technology professors, Gary Bertoline, Judith Birchman and Marvin Sarapin, have been appointed by the international honor society Epsilon Pi Tau to edit its Journal of Technology Studies. The journal focuses on technology research and history and social issues affected by technology. The new editorial team plans to publish some articles online as soon as they are accepted.
• Alumni honors:
- Sanford (Sandy) Belden was elected national grand president of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at the group’s national convention in St. Louis. Alpha Gamma Rho is the national professional and social agricultural fraternity, with more than 59,000 members and chapters on 71 campuses. Belden, who lives in Hatfield, Mass., was an agricultural student at Purdue, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1964, a master’s in 1967 and a doctoral in 1971.
- A tribute was held Aug. 26 for Mary Louise Foster for her pioneering work in international education for Purdue. Foster helped to establish the first program in home economics in South America as part of the development of the University of Vicosa in Brazil. The tribute at Purdue was sponsored by the College of Agriculture’s International Programs in Agriculture, The Women’s Resource Office and the Butler Center for Leadership Excellence. Foster graduated from Purdue with a master’s degree in family economics in 1954 and served as a member of the faculty in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences, now Health and Human Sciences, where the student council sponsors a scholarship in her name. Although she retired in 1987, she continues to serve the college as an academic advisor in consumer sciences and retailing.
