Appointments, honors and activities
• Faculty and staff honors:
- William Chappell, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Joseph Sinfield, assistant professor of civil engineering, are among 86 engineers chosen for the National Academy of Engineering's 16th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. The engineers, ages 30-45, come from industry, academia and government. They were nominated for their exceptional engineering research and technical work. Andrew Weiner, the Scifres Family Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is serving as symposium chair. The symposium will be Sept. 23-25 at the IBM Learning Center in Armonk, N.Y. (JBA)
- Rabi Mohtar, director of Purdue's Global Engineering Program and a professor of agricultural and biological engineering, has received the Kishida International Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to engineering, mechanization and technology related programs of education, research, development, consultation or technology transfer that have resulted in improved food production, living conditions or education for people living outside the United States. - Tom Hertel, distinguished professor of agricultural economics, presented the presidential address at the Agricultural and Applied Economists Association's 2010 Joint Annual Meeting. Hertel became president of AAEA in July. AAEA is a nonprofit association serving the professional interests of members working in agricultural and broadly related fields of applied economics.
• Student honors:
- Daye Phillippo, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts, has been awarded an Alpha Sigma Lambda national scholarship. Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL) is an honor society that recognizes the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home, family, work and school. The scholarships are awarded to adult students in continuing higher education based on scholarship, leadership, the clarity and content of their personal statement, strength of recommendation and need. The honor society awarded seven national scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year.
