Appointments, honors and activities
• Faculty and staff honors:
— Tom Turpin, a professor of entomology, was elected a 2010 Fellow of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) for outstanding contributions in research, teaching, Extension and administration. He will be recognized at the ESA's annual meeting in December in San Diego. Turpin has taught a variety of courses at Purdue, including insect pest management, introductory entomology bee keeping, insects in prose and poetry, and honors courses on insects in literature and art and insects in theater. Turpin's outreach achievements include founding Bug Bowl, a mainstay of Purdue's annual Spring Fest, and the Linnaean Games for ESA. He writes a newspaper column, "On 6 Legs," and has authored two books on insects. Turpin has received several teaching awards. He served as ESA president in 1992. Turpin joined the Purdue staff in 1971.
• Notables:
— Jerry Lynch, interim dean of Krannert School of Management and professor of economics, attended the ringing of the closing bell at NASDAQ on July 23. Lynch was there because of his involvement with the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program. The EBV program provides experiential training in entrepreneurship and small business management to veterans with disabilities. A participant in the EBV program, Marine Cpl. Justin Bajema, was given the honor of ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ. He is an entrepreneur and representative of the EBV program.
— Purdue forestry and natural resources professor John Bickham, director of Discovery Park's Center for the Environment, will deliver a lecture Wednesday (Aug. 4) at the monthly Advanced Photon Source Colloquium at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. The monthly colloquium is designed to benefit the Argonne community by bringing distinguished scientists in all disciplines to lecture on topics of general interest. The Advanced Photon Source Laboratory is a hard X-ray synchrotron radiation research facility with beamlines and users working on material science, biological science, environmental science, physical science, nanostructures, and other areas.
