Purdue to host counseling psychology conference

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University's College of Education will host the 2012 Great Lakes Counseling Psychology Conference on March 23 and 24.

The focus for this year's conference is Searching for Cultural Understanding: An Intentional Focus on Diversity, Social Justice and Internationalization.

The conference will have two keynote presentations. Barry Chung, president of the Society of Counseling Psychology and professor and chair in the Department of Counseling and Applied Educational Psychology at Northeastern University, will talk about "Globalization: Implications for Counseling Psychology." Mark Leach, professor of educational and counseling psychology and director of clinical training at the University of Louisville, will discuss "Ethics: What's Happening Internationally?"

The schedule also includes a workshop on suicide prevention, intervention and postvention led by John Westefeld, professor of counseling psychology at the University of Iowa; roundtable discussions; and poster presentations. A discussion will be held on the state of the counseling psychology field with panelists Andy Horne, distinguished research professor emeritus and dean of the University of Georgia College of Education; Roberta Nutt, training director of the counseling psychology program at the University of Houston; and Westefeld.

Three student research awards will be presented, and the 10th anniversary of the American Psychological Association's accreditation of Purdue's counseling psychology program will be celebrated.

"We have an exciting program planned with more than 20 symposia and roundtable discussions and 70 poster presentations," said Ayse Ciftci, Purdue assistant professor of counseling psychology and conference co-organizer.

Registration is $90 for professionals and faculty and $60 for students. Meals are not included.  Continuing education credits are available.
