Books and Coffee brings readers, Purdue faculty together

January 30, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Books and Coffee series, co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Purdue Student Union Board, will begin Thursday (Feb. 2).

"Faculty members enjoy sharing their expertise in literature and culture, both inside and outside the classroom," said Nancy Peterson, head of the English department at Purdue. "Books and Coffee brings together readers from across the campus and the local community."

Books and Coffee will be held from 4-5 p.m. each Thursday in February. The events are free and open to the public. Free coffee, tea and cocoa will be available from 4-4:30 p.m. Following the presentation, a drawing will be held for prizes donated by local businesses.

Even if you have not read the book, you are still welcome to come to the event, said Venetria Patton, Books and Coffee coordinator.

"We selected a list of best-sellers for this year's series to get others talking about what people are reading," Patton said.

The locations, speakers and book selections are:

      * Feb. 2. Stewart Center, Room 302/306. Carolyn Johnson, director of the diversity resource office, will present "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," by Rebecca Skloot.

      * Feb. 9. Stewart Center, Room 302/306. Kris Bross, associate professor of English, will present "Caleb's Crossing," by Geraldine Brooks.

      * Feb. 16. Stewart Center, Room 302/306. Charles Ross, professor of English, will present "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," by Stieg Larsson.

      * Feb. 23. Purdue Memorial Union, South Ballroom. Jennifer Freeman-Marshall, assistant professor of English, will present "The Girl Who Fell From the Sky," by Heidi W. Durrow.
