Award-winning play 'Proof' comes to Purdue in February

February 26, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Walnut Street Theatre will bring David Auburn's award-winning play to Purdue University on Feb. 18 (8 p.m.) and 19 (3 p.m.) in Loeb Playhouse.

The performance is presented by Purdue Convocations and includes a pre-show discussion before the Feb. 18 performance. Professor Susan South of Purdue's Department of Psychological Sciences will lead a discussion on personality and relationships at 7 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 206.

Can a child inherit a parent's brilliance? What happens if madness might also be inherited along with it? Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for best play in 2001, and later adapted into the acclaimed film starring Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow, "Proof" takes an intimate and intense look at a family treading a thin line between intelligence and insanity.

Whip-smart Catherine has sacrificed her education to care for her recently deceased father, Robert, a genius mathematics professor who tragically descended into mental illness. When one of Robert's former students discovers a revolutionary mathematical "proof" in Robert's office, the proceedings become complicated as the effects of an unlikely romance, unsubstantiated claims of the authorship of the proof, and the specter of inherited madness create a formula for intense drama.

Tickets are $30 for the general public and $22 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at 765-494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets. Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more can be ordered at 765-496-1977.
