January 24, 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Farmer Lee Jones, culinary judge from Food Network's "Iron Chef America," will be present on Feb. 18 during Purdue Student Union Board's Boiler Culinary Throwdown student competition.

Jones, with his trademark overalls and red bowtie, is a familiar sight at the culinary industry's top shows and events. He has been featured in numerous national publications including Bon Appétit, Newsweek and The New York Times. Jones was also the first farmer to judge "Iron Chef America."

He will be judging the competition, along with two local chefs. Jones also will give a presentation on "Farming for Flavor and Sustainability" during the event at 3 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union, North and South Ballrooms.

The Boiler Culinary Throwdown student competition, based on the Iron Chef competitions, will begin at 12 p.m. The competition is free and open to the public. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

The competition will consist of five teams that have 90 minutes to prepare a three-course meal for the panel of judges. Judging will be based on presentation and appearance, taste, effective use of a "secret ingredient," techniques and teamwork, and originality. After the judging, the winner of the competition will be revealed during the awards ceremony at 4 p.m.
