Alumna, CEO of College Mentors for Kids to speak at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Erin Slater, CEO of College Mentors for Kids and a Purdue alumna, will speak at the university at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 19).

This event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Purdue University College of Liberal Arts Career Development and is part of the LACD Speaker Series. The talk will be in Beering Hall, Room 2290, and a reception will be held in the lobby from 6-7 p.m. Slater will speak about the importance of volunteerism and how community engagement can help build an individual's professional brand.

College Mentors for Kids is a nonprofit organization that pairs first- through eighth-grade children with local college student mentors. The college mentors help the children to understand higher education opportunities and to encourage them to make wise academic and social choices.

Slater founded the Purdue chapter of College Mentors for Kids in 1998. After graduating from Purdue, she was invited to join the College Mentors staff. Slater received Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman's Partner in Progress award in 2010, the Indianapolis Business Journal 40 Under 40 in 2008 and Indy's Best and Brightest in 2007. In 2009, Slater won the Dreamers into Doers Award and appeared on The Martha Stewart Show.
