WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Grammy-winning jazz musician Esperanza Spalding will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 in Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse.

The concert, presented by Purdue Convocations, is in support of Spalding's album "Chamber Music Society." The album explores a heady fusion of jazz, folk, world music, and the foundations of classical music, with her scat singing soaring above her sinuous and syncopated bass lines.

Spalding won a Grammy earlier this year, the first jazz musician ever named best new artist. She returns to Loeb Playhouse after a 2007 appearance as a discovery artist. The bassist, singer, songwriter, producer and arranger counts Prince as a mentor and President Barack Obama as a fan.

Since her last visit to Purdue, Spalding has toured extensively with her own group, performed with jazz luminaries McCoy Tyner and Joe Lovano, and made appearances on "The Late Show" with David Letterman, "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and the "CBS Saturday Early Show," among others. She also performed at the 2010 Nobel Prize ceremony in Oslo.

Spalding's journey as a solo artist began with the May 2008 release of "Esperanza," which went on to become the best-selling album by a new jazz artist internationally and also was critically acclaimed.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $22 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at 765-494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW.
