September 14, 2011

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The author of "Love is the Best Medicine" and "Tell Me Where it Hurts" is coming to Purdue University on Sept. 20 to give a public talk in conjunction with a veterinary conference.

Nick Trout, best-selling author and veterinarian, will present "Extreme Bond: Where is the New Importance of Companion Animals Taking Veterinary Medicine?" at the Purdue Memorial Union. A book signing will precede the lecture at 5:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the 2011 Elanco Lectureship, and will be held during the School of Veterinary Medicine's Fall Conference for Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians.

"Dr. Trout's experiences at the prestigious Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston have fed his understanding of the strength of the human-animal bond," said Alan Beck, the Dorothy N. McAllister Professor of Animal Ecology and director of the veterinary school's Center for the Human-Animal Bond. "The center and Elanco are excited about having his unique perspective as he shares insights into the complex nature of the human-pet relationship with veterinary professionals."

Trout, who graduated from veterinary school at the University of Cambridge in 1989, is a diplomate of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons and a staff surgeon at Angell Animal Medical Center. In addition to "Tell Me Where It Hurts," a New York Times bestseller, and "Love is the Best Medicine," Trout has written "Ever By My Side," published in February by Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House. He also is a contributing columnist for The Bark, a magazine about modern dog culture.

The lectureship is sponsored by Elanco in collaboration with Purdue's Center for the Human-Animal Bond. Elanco is a division of Eli Lilly and Co. This is the fifth year of the lectureship series, which is endowed through a gift to the Purdue Center for the Human-Animal Bond by Elanco/Lilly.
