'My Heart in a Suitcase' tells story of a child's courage in time of war

March 29, 2011

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - ArtsPower will bring its production of "My Heart in a Suitcase" to Purdue University on April 13.

The 7 p.m. performance in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse is presented in partnership with Purdue Convocations and the Greater Lafayette Holocaust Remembrances Committee. The performance includes a post-show discussion with cast members.

Based on the autobiography written by Anne Lehman Fox, the play chronicles her escape from Nazi Germany in 1938 on the Kindertransport, a rescue mission that led nearly 10,000 Jewish children to safety throughout the British Isles. It is recommended for children in grades 4-8.

Tickets are $14 for the general public and $10 for those 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at 765-494-3933 or 800-914-SHOW. Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster outlets.

Mark and Gary Blackman founded ArtsPower in 1985 and it is the second-largest producer of theater for young and family audiences in the nation. Nearly seven million people in 46 states have seen its 22 professional touring productions.

Purdue Convocations presents a broad array of performances each year at Purdue University, encompassing jazz, dance, comedy, drama, Broadway productions, and classical and contemporary concerts. Convocations also enables artists to visit area classrooms, welcomes schools for special matinee performances, encourages campus professors to integrate performances into their curricula, and helps teachers receive arts-integrative professional development.

Since 1985, the Friends of Convocations have contributed more than $6.3 million to support educational outreach and 733 performances at Purdue. In June, Purdue Convocations will conclude a four-year fundraising campaign to raise $2.5 million to continue these programs.
