State 'mathletes' to compete at Purdue

March 7, 2011

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – More than 200 "mathletes" from middle and junior high schools throughout Indiana will test their math skills Saturday (March 12) during the MATHCOUNTS state competition at Purdue University.

MATHCOUNTS is a national nonprofit competition that promotes achievement in mathematics. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in Stewart Center, Room 302. The final round will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Class of 1950, Lecture Hall Room 224. An awards ceremony will conclude the events at approximately 2:30 p.m. The afternoon events are free and open to the public.

"MATHCOUNTS is like the mathematical equivalent of March Madness," said Jerry Woodward, mathematics K-12 outreach coordinator and regional competition co-director. "The countdown round is a fast-moving event in which the top students from the morning competition respond to questions projected onto a screen. They usually know the answers even before the questions are read."

The event is sponsored by Purdue's College of Engineering and College of Science, the I-STEM Resource Network and the A.A. Potter Chapter of the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers.

The top four mathletes and coach of the winning team will represent Indiana at the national competition, May 5-11 at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

Participating schools include East Tipp Middle School, Lafayette; Happy Hollow Elementary School, West Lafayette; Klondike Middle School, West Lafayette; Tecumseh Junior High School, Lafayette; West Lafayette Junior/Senior High School, West Lafayette; and Zionsville West Middle School, Zionsville.
