WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia will use the magic of black light to bring "The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favourites" to life at Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse at 3 p.m. on Feb. 27.

This performance is presented by Purdue Convocations and includes a pre-show activity. Learn about caterpillars, butterflies, and the insect life cycle from Purdue's Department of Entomology at 2 p.m. on Feb. 27 in the Stewart Center west lobby.

The "Very Hungry Caterpillar" includes the story of the caterpillar's metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly; the fanciful account of Little Cloud's travels through the sky; and the chameleon's discovery of his own unique nature. Directed and designed by Jim Morrow, the triple-bill show incorporates original music by Nova Scotian composer Steven Naylor, and innovative black light staging techniques that highlight Morrow's puppets and props.

On tour continuously since 1999, Mermaid Theatre has performed compilations of five Eric Carle stories more than 1,665 times throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Singapore, Japan, Holland, Vietnam, Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia is in its 39th season. The company received Export Excellence Awards from Nova Scotia in 2001 and the government of Canada in 2001 and 2005.

Tickets are $14 for the general public and $10 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students.
