Memories Roadshow seeks personal stories to learn more about community
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — People are invited to share their personal stories, memorabilia, historical documents and other materials with Purdue University students, professors and a professional archivist at Memories Roadshow on Saturday (Feb. 5).
The event, which is supported by WBAA and the College of Liberal Arts, is 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the West Lafayette Public Library, 208 W. Columbia. It is free and open to the public. Library staff members also will be able to listen to stories and evaluate materials for research value.
People are encouraged to bring old photographs, yearbooks, records, papers, souvenirs or even just a story to tell, says Susan Curtis, professor of history. They also are interested in materials and memories related to the WBAA in the 1920s as well as Purdue student life off campus or hidden histories that are often not discussed.
The students participating in the event are members of the Purdue graduate seminar course "Archival Theory and Practice." The course, taught by Curtis and Kristina Bross, an associate professor of English, introduces students to archival research. Students work in partnership with community institutions like the West Lafayette Public Library and WBAA to provide assistance with archival projects that will contribute to a greater understanding of the community's history.
