Annual tax school, ag tax workshop offer training, credits

November 17, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Tax professionals can receive training on tax law and farmers can receive information on agricultural income tax issues at two annual Purdue Extension workshops.

The Income Tax School will be this month and early December, followed by the Agricultural Tax Workshop in mid-December.

The Income Tax School provides practical information for filing individual and small-business returns, said Purdue University agricultural economist and tax law specialist George Patrick.

"This year's program will review recently enacted tax and related legislation," Patrick said. "Provisions taking effect, or sun-setting, in 2010 and 2011 will be emphasized."

The Income Tax School offers 16 hours of continuing education credits to accountants, enrolled agents, attorneys and certified financial planners. Attorneys also can qualify for as many as 12.9 hours of continuing legal education.

The two-day workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time. Instructors include Patrick, enrolled agents, certified public accountants, former and current Internal Revenue Service employees and a representative of the Indiana Department of Revenue.

An extra hour of ethics training will be available from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on the first day of the schools in Muncie, West Lafayette and both Indianapolis locations. This will allow participants to receive two hours of continuing professional credits for ethics. Participants from other school locations are welcome at these sessions.
