Hindustani Instrumental Concert will feature Grammy winner

August 31, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Two musicians will perform at the Hindustani Instrumental Concert on Sept. 19 at Purdue University.

The instrumental performance will include Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, performing on Indian slide guitar -- also known as the Mohan Veena -- and Subhen Chatterjee on the Tabla.

The concert, which is sponsored by the Indian Classical Music Association, is 6 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Tickets, which are $8 for members of the student association, $10 for general students and $15 for the general public, will be on sale at the door.

Bhatt, along with Ry Cooder, won a Grammy award in 1994 for their World Music album, "A Meeting by the River." Bhatt also is the creator of the Mohan Veena, and he has attracted international attention by his successful Indianization of the western Hawaiian guitar by combining sitar, sarod and veena techniques, as well as adding 14 more strings to the instrument.

Chatterjee, a soloist and accompanist, is a senior disciple of tabla maestro Pandit Swapan Chowdhury. Subhen's own KARMA, an Indo-jazz fusion orchestra, is one of the most popular bands in India today.
