March 25, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Jack Bowen, the author of "If You Can Read This: The Philosophy of Bumper Stickers," will speak at Purdue University on April 6.

Bowen's talk, which is free and open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 322. The event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts. A book signing will follow the talk. Books will be available on site for purchase at $10 through Von's Book Shop.

"If You Can Read This: The Philosophy of Bumper Stickers" was released this month by Random House. The book mixes the pop culture phenomenon of bumper stickers with the ideas of historically prominent philosophers and scientists, while highlighting some popular bumper stickers, such as "If Ignorance Is Bliss, Why Aren’t More People Happy?" and "Clones Are People Too."

Bowen also is the author of the novel "The Dream Weaver" and the college textbook "A Journey Through the Landscape of Philosophy." He teaches philosophy and coaches water polo at Menlo Preparatory School in Atherton, Calif. Bowen also serves as the senior lecturer for the Great Books Program at Stanford University in the summers.
