Deadline nears for national Idea to Product Competition for Social Entrepreneurship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The deadline is Monday (Feb. 15) for Purdue University student teams wanting to participate in the 2010 National Idea to Product Competition for Social Entrepreneurship, scheduled for April 17 on campus.

Participants will compete for a total of $20,000 in cash prizes - $10,000 for the winner, $8,000 for second place, and $2,000 for third place. Students from Purdue's West Lafayette campus and all regional campuses are eligible to participate.

The application, in the form of a request for information (RFI), must be a single page and no more than 500 words. The form must highlight the participant's:

* Potential partnership with local, national or international nonprofit organizations.

* Benefits of the product or service in keeping with social mission of the partner.

* Type of technology or service provided.

The finalists, who will be selected on Feb. 24, will be asked to submit a three- to five-page summary document about the feasibility of their product or service by March 26. The April 17 national competition will be at the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Room 121.

Sponsoring this year's competition are the Motorola Foundation, Social Entrepreneurship Initiatives and the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship in Purdue's Discovery Park, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Purdue's Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, based in Discovery Park's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, is a program that provides a pathway for commercialization of products created by students for nonprofit organizations to address social needs.
