Reminder: Child care in West Lafayette community

  • Purdue’s College of Health and Human Sciences operates the Ben and Maxine Miller Child Development Laboratory School. Outside providers operate other centers in the community, including Early Learning Indiana, which operates the Patty Jischke Center and the Early Care and Education Center (ECEC), both locations subsidized by the university through buildings and financial assistance.
  • With recent changes to the child care market across Indiana, Early Learning Indiana (ELI) announced that it would merge the ECEC into the Jischke Center, due to a 40% drop in demand of their centers and a persistent 25% vacancy rate. ELI had attempted to fill spots through the wait list but had not been able to fill the open spots. All current families who want a seat at the consolidated center will have one, and there is also capacity at the Jischke Center for additional children.
  • Multiple operators in the state of Indiana may be interested in the West Lafayette market. Because of the importance of child care to the university community, the university has chosen to continue to subsidize an operator that wishes to enter the market in the current ECEC building. A meeting by the interested families will soon be scheduled to quantify market demand and attract additional operators.
