HSA, FSA, HRA card usage available at more locations on West Lafayette campus

Human Resources is alerting faculty and staff that they can now use their health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA) and health reimbursement account (HRA) cards at several new places on the West Lafayette campus. As a reminder, cards have always been able to be used at the Center for Healthy Living (CHL). The additional locations include: 

 While card usage on campus is available, you are still responsible for making sure you use the funds on eligible expenses. Using funds on ineligible expenses typically results in having to pay taxes and also a tax penalty on the amount spent. To help you decipher eligible expenses, utilize the following resources as needed:

 Keep in mind, some expenses are only eligible under certain circumstances, for example:

  • Massage treatment (available on campus via Recreation & Wellness) for specific ailment or diagnosis
  • Weight-loss program for treatment of a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (e.g., obesity, hypertension, heart disease)
    • Requires a letter of medical necessity
    • Does not include the cost of diet food
    • Note: Health club dues and gym memberships are not eligible expenses, but separate fees charged there for weight loss activities are considered eligible if they are for the treatment for a specific disease (would require a letter of medical necessity)

If you have an HSA, it is your responsibility to ensure eligibility before using your funds. You may be asked to submit documentation to verify your expenses in the event you are audited by the IRS. 

Also, be aware that if you have an FSA or HRA, you may be asked by HSA Bank to submit documentation to verify your expense is eligible. Any unverified expenses will be reported back to you the following year as taxable income per the IRS.
