Mark your calendars: Center for Healthy Living, Purdue Extension have array of programs coming up

Complete health, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, healthy eating, blood pressure and more are the topics for the Center for Healthy Living workshops being offered first quarter (January, February and March) of 2019. Workshops provided by the CHL (and Purdue Extension) are free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan. Registration for all workshops can be done via the Healthy Boiler portal or by calling the Center for Healthy Living at 765-494-0111 and must be done by the day before the workshop begins. Programs administered by Purdue Extension have a separate number to call for registration.

Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP)

Jan. 15 – March 21, Noon-1 p.m., Tues. and Thurs. (twice weekly), STEW 313 

The Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) is a Lifestyle Medicine Education Program which focuses on whole-person health! CHIP is facilitated over 18 sessions in a group environment with dynamic group discussions and peer support. The program integrates optimal nutrition, exercise and behavioral psychology principles and tools. You will get a pre and post health-risk assessment, a comprehensive toolkit, help with cooking, food prep, exercise, online program content and much more!  CHIP can help you by significantly reducing the common risk factors for lifestyle diseases (such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure) and improve your health knowledge, energy, desire to exercise, resilience and life fulfilment.  

Type 2 Diabetes Overview (virtual)

Join us for a lunch and learn session as we cover the basics of type 2 diabetes and discuss an eight-week diabetes course offered in 2019 and targeted for those with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Self-Compassion and Motivation

This presentation looks at the difference between self-care and self-compassion, gives recommendations on how to incorporate more of each in our day and how they directly correlate with intrinsic motivation.

Create Your 2019 Wellness Vision

Are you planning on making any changes or resolutions for 2019? If you want to create a strategic wellness plan for yourself, complete with doable action steps that you can keep, this workshop is for you. Come learn how to create your own wellness plan specific to what will work for you and make 2019 the year you take charge of your health!

Heart Smart (Purdue Extension)

Feb.5 – Feb. 26, Noon – 1 p.m., CoRec (Wellness Conference Room)

This program, led by Purdue Extension, is for those who wants to reduce their risk of heart disease. During the workshop, you will learn how to monitor your risk factors for heart disease and make simple changes to your daily routine that will improve your heart health. In addition, you will discover what risk factors you can control, including using the DASH Eating Plan and incorporating physical activity. This program is four, one-hour lessons. It is highly encouraged that all four sessions are attended. Topics include: Know Your Risks, Know Your Numbers, Heart-Healthy Cooking and Take Action. Blood Pressure Basics

Taking Control of Your Diabetes

Feb. 6 – April 3, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., CoRec (Wellness Conference Room)

Are you pre-diabetic or have type 2 diabetes? Do you want to better understand type 2 diabetes and how it affects your body? This eight-week program will explain what type 2 diabetes is and the role nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress management can have on your blood glucose levels? Eligible participants will be given a glucose meter with supplies to check their blood glucose levels.

Eating Healthy on a Budget

March 6, 12:10-12:50 p.m., Purdue Memorial Union, Room 230

Eating well certainly doesn’t have to break the bank. Join us to learn some tips and tricks to saving money on your grocery bill, while maximizing the quality of your food choices. We will discuss stocking your kitchen with healthy foods and which foods give you the most nutritional bang for your buck. You will leave class with a grocery shopping strategy, money-saving recipes, a grocery list for ideas and maybe even some staple food items to take home.
