This Week at the Purdue Student Farm

Praying Mantis on flower

Hi all,

A short word this week as Jane is currently out fighting a bout of food poisoning. The heat continues to hang on which is not doing kind things for our cooler season crops like kale, cabbage, chard, etc. but has been doing wonderous things for the ripening of the tomatoes and peppers. It does look like we will have a good cool down starting next week which looks more and more like the true fall we have all been waiting for. We are excited to be on the back half of the season and really look forward to finishing up the CSA program strong with lots of cabbage, radish, turnips, beets, carrots, ginger, and garlic to come!

Spotlight: Sam Landers

Sam Landers
Hey! My name is Sam Landers. I am a junior majoring in Computer Science, and minoring in Sustainable Food and Farming Systems. I love working on the farm because it gives me a chance to work in the sun and get my hands dirty—something that you don’t get to do often as a computer geek. I have to make a conscious effort to ‘touch grass’ whenever I can. I also love to cook, and nothing is better than making something from scratch with ingredients that you helped grow only a few miles away!

In my free time I like to hike and backpack, especially with the Purdue Outing Club. On any given weekend if I’m not backpacking, I’m probably volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes in Greater Lafayette. I also lead a small simulation team for Purdue Orbital because I think rockets are super cool.
