This Week at the Purdue Student Farm

Pollinator garden at Purdue Student Farm

Good Thursday everyone. We hope you all have been enjoying your veggies thus far. If you were excited about the addition of tomatoes to your bags last week, prepare yourselves… Our tomatoes are starting to ripen very quickly. You can expect weekly tomatoes roughly until the very end of the CSA (until early-November), so collect all the tomato-based recipes you come across. You’ll need them.

This week, the interns and I have thoroughly enjoyed and taken advantage of the moments we can goof around in between harvesting, weeding, and other farm-related tasks. Chris doesn’t seem to mind, too much. Between the quiet office tasks of answering emails and planning successional plantings of mid-summer season crops, he actually seems to enjoy our terrible jokes. He may react with the occasional sarcastic, “I should’ve never hired you.” But where would he be without his hardworking interns?!

Speaking of interns, I’m excited to share with you our first student spotlight featuring Hailey (Haileypeño) Kane:

Hello! My name is Hailey. I’m a rising senior in Natural Resources and Environmental Science. This is my first summer season at the farm, but I’ve worked here since November learning the ropes and loving learning new things around the farm. My favorite part of working at the farm is the people – the ones I work with and everyone I meet at the CSA. Another favorite aspect is how the excess produce is donated to the cultural centers and ACE Campus Food Pantry, which I’ve worked with through the school year.
