HLA Engages Crowds at Spring Fest Despite Rainy Start

Large “SPRING FEST” sign with lit letters stands in front of a white event tent as attendees line up and gather outside.

Spring Fest kicked off with muddy conditions, but the weather did little to dampen enthusiasm as attendees turned out to engage with HLA activities and demonstrations.

One of the most popular attractions—the plant necklace station—saw high demand throughout the day, with supplies running out by 2 p.m. Many thanks to volunteers Yiwei Huang (and her daughter), Alexandra Jewell, Kristina Cooley, Lori Hoagland, Jose Cabezas, and Ishraq Awashra for their help assembling and distributing plant necklaces to eager visitors.

Participants sit under a tent working with paper models to build small landscape scenes, with drawn buildings and trees arranged on a tabletop.

The Purdue student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (PASLA) also drew families with a hands-on children’s activity, where participants helped design a Disney-inspired landscape.

Master Gardener volunteers demonstrate container gardening to a group gathered under a tent, with plants and materials arranged on tables.

Purdue Extension Master Gardener volunteers Kathryn Reeves and Michal Hathaway led two well-attended container gardening demonstrations. Additional Tippecanoe County Master Gardener volunteers were on hand throughout the event to answer questions and engage attendees with a houseplant identification quiz.

Room filled with tables of potted plants for sale as attendees browse and talk; chalkboard behind lists plant prices including $4 and $5 options.

The Purdue Horticultural Society and Purdue Student Farm Organization hosted their annual plant sale, which was again a success and a highlight for many visitors.

Special thanks to Pam Fisher for coordinating HLA’s presence and ensuring a strong and engaging showing at this year’s Spring Fest.
