Katherine Pivaral Toledo Publishes Study on Corn Belt Crop Diversification

Congratulations to Katherine Pivaral Toledo (MS, HLA; now at Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources) on the publication of “From fields to markets: Diversification case studies in the U.S. Corn Belt via a social-ecological systems lens” in the Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development. Co-authored with Dr. Ariana Torres the study is part of the USDA-funded #DiverseCornBelt project. Drawing on 29 interviews with farmers, industry representatives, co-op members, and nonprofit staff, it examines how oats, peas, and wheat are entering corn-soybean rotations and finds that diversification depends on more than agronomics: farmer decision-making, knowledge sharing, supply chain coordination, and farmer-Extension collaboration all shape outcomes.
