Governing AI in the States: Early Lessons and Open Questions
Who decides whether an AI system is ready to help determine someone’s insurance coverage, screen a job applicant, or deliver a public service? State policymakers are already confronting these decisions, often with limited staff and technical expertise. This panel brings together leaders from state government, AI safety, and civil society to examine what states can do, what they’re learning, and where they’re struggling. Drawing on Indiana and experiences across the country, we’ll discuss protecting children, preparing for changes in work, and governing AI in health care and other consequential settings. We’ll also consider how governments should evaluate the AI they buy and use, and what smaller agencies and communities need to use it responsibly. What would it look like for Indiana to get this right?
