Uniting Purdue & the United Way
Purdue’s partnership with United Way of Greater Lafayette began in the early 1980s under the leadership of President Steven Beering and Senior Vice President of Development Charles Wise. Since then, Purdue faculty, staff, and friends have built one of the largest campus-based United Way campaigns, directly supporting local agencies that serve our community.
These partner agencies provide critical resources – food and housing for families in crisis, mental health support for children, adult literacy programs, and more. Many of these services directly benefit the Purdue community, supporting undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff through counseling, addiction and disability services, senior programs, and other essential resources.
Beyond funding, the United Way and its partner agencies are trusted collaborators, working year-round with Purdue faculty and student groups to advance engaged scholarship, service, and hands-on experiential learning that strengthens both campus and community.
With the expansion of Purdue University in Indianapolis, the Purdue United Way partnership continues to grow. No matter where you live, your Purdue United Way contribution strengthens your own community, as West Lafayette-based employees support United Way of Greater Lafayette, Indianapolis-based employees support United Way of Central Indiana – and all have the opportunity to direct their gift ensuring your support flows directly to the people and places you care about most.

Through a network of local human service agencies, United Way invests in programs that go beyond immediate relief. Inspired by the principle, “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime,” these agencies focus on helping people achieve lasting self-sufficiency. From supporting children and families in crisis to guiding individuals toward stability and independence, this network provides a comprehensive range of services that strengthen our entire community.
