RE:      Interim Dean, College of Engineering, PWL

Date:   June 22, 2022

Colleagues,

I am writing to announce the appointment of Mark Lundstrom as interim dean of the College of Engineering, effective, July 1, 2022. Dr. Lundstrom served in this role with distinction during 2020, while Dean Mung Chiang was on leave during his service to the Department of State. As most of you are aware, Dr. Chiang will be stepping down from his position as dean of the College of Engineering on June 30, 2022, to focus on his continued role as executive vice president for strategic initiatives and on his transition to president, which is effective Jan. 1, 2023.

For those of you who don’t know Dr. Lundstrom, he studies the physics of electronic devices, especially nanoscale transistors and novel devices for computing, communication, and energy conversion and storage. His team’s work has led to a widely used simple, conceptual model for nanoscale field-effect transistors and a deep understanding of electrical, thermal and electro-thermal transport from the nanoscale to the macroscale. He is the author of four books and more than 500 scientific publications. Lundstrom is a life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

We will launch the search process for the dean of engineering this summer. I have asked Alexandra Boltasseva, the Ron and Dotty Garvin Tonjes Professor in the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Dan DeLaurentis, professor in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, to co-chair the Search Advisory Committee. If you have nominations for Search Advisory Committee members, please send them to Ruth Ann Weiderhaft at weiderhaft@purdue.edu by close of business June 30.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Lundstrom for accepting this important assignment!
