J-1: Extension of Stay

A scholar must always maintain a valid Form DS2019 during stay in the US. The ending date in item 3 on the Form DS2019 is the expiration date. If eligible to continue in the program beyond the date in item 3, the ISS liaison will need to initiate the eform process "Current J-1 Extension."

The extension may be processed 90 days before the completion date on the current Form DS 2019 but no later than the completion date.  Please speak to the counselor who signed the DS2019 if the completion date has past and an extension is needed.  If an extension is not needed, a J-1 scholar then has a 30 day grace period after the completion date to depart the US.

Any extension request must remain within the time limit for the J-1 scholar's category.  The category is listed on the DS2019 in item 4.  Here are the limits for the most common scholar categories:

  • J-1 Professor or J-1 Research Scholar: five years
  • J-1 Specialist or J-1 Student Intern: one year
  • J-1 Short-term Scholar: six months

To request an extension, the scholar must contact the ISS liaison for their department to initiate a eform request in MyISS. An email will be sent to the scholar providing a list of eforms needed. The liaison will also assist the department in submitting eforms required for the department to submit.

On receiving the email with a link to the DS2019 Extension Personal Info eforms, you will need the following documents in an electronic form that permits it to be uploaded:

  • Copy of current health insurance proof in English
  • Proof of any non-Purdue financial support for the time period requested for the extension. (The department will provide proof of any Purdue financial support proof.)
    • This proof must be less than one year old at the time of the request.
    • The Financial Info eform will provide additional guidance based on the type of financial support
    • Minimum required funding for an extension is:
      • $1300/month for the scholar
      • $675/month for the first dependent (spouse or child)
      • $350/month for each additional dependent
  • If you've extended the following documents since the last DS2019 issued, an upload of the new document is required:
    • Passport
    • J-1 Visa
  • Form I-94, obtained at https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/i94/#/recent-search

Within 10 business days of all eforms completion, ISS will issue a new DS2019 with the extended end date or contact the scholar/department regarding any questions or missing documents.

Caution: Extension of stay in the United States is the scholar's responsibility. By forgetting a deadline and applying late, a scholar risks denial. Please be certain to apply in timely fashion if needing to extend.
