In the Classrooms & Research Labs

  • Purdue’s Climate Change Research Center is piloting its Hestia system to quantify all fossil fuel-based carbon dioxide emissions, down to the neighborhood and roadway scale, hour-by-hour. That information will help weigh the environmental impact of future growth and development.
  • The Vulcan project is a NASA/DOE funded effort under the North American Carbon Program (NACP) to quantify North American fossil fuel carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at space and time scales much finer than has been achieved in the past.  The Vulcan project is led by Purdue Professor Kevin Robert Gurney and his Purdue research team.
  • Indiana WIRED — Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development — an economic and workforce development initiative funded by the federal government and administered by Purdue University in 14 Indiana counties.  The initiative offers a free Green Manufacturing Certificate Program to educate workers in clean manufacturing, energy conservation, and waste reduction.
  • Richard Meilan, associate professor of Forestry and Natural Resources with Purdue’s Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center and the Center for Tree Genetics, has co-authored a study report showing that modified poplar cuttings can eliminate pollutants from former oil-storage facilities.
  • The 2008 Purdue Student Pugwash Midwest Regional Conference in March took a look at how human energy consumption impacts the environment. Topics included global warming solutions, solar power, hybrid electric vehicles, biofuels, and nuclear energy.
  • Purdue University’s carbon footprint was measured at 3.6 carbon metric tons per capita in April 2007, below the national average of 6.  Students in last year’s Carbon Neutrality at Purdue class developed proposals for reducing it even further.

Many centers and groups at Purdue focus on research related to sustainability, including:
