RE:       Performance and Merit Process Resources

As the 2019-2020 performance and merit process continues, employees and managers should review and update goal progress through March 1.

In addition to goal completion, as part of the performance review all staff employees will be evaluated against a standard group of core competencies. Similar to past performance appraisals, these will include job performance, professional development, culture and values.

Resources for managers and employees – including video tutorials and quick reference guides for both staff self-assessments and manager assessments – are available on the Performance and Merit Process webpage.

Those directly involved in the merit process (such as directors assigned as compensation managers, directors of financial affairs or financial managers) will receive additional communications regarding the training resources available and the performance and merit timeline. The official merit increase policy will be distributed along with budget materials by early April.

For your reference, here is a reminder overview of the timeline:

  • All staff employees establish goals in SuccessFactors within 30 days of hire/transfer; employees and managers continue to review goal progress through March 1.
  • Staff employees complete annual performance self-assessments by March 13; managers complete assessments by April 3.
  • HR business partners collaborate with senior leaders to finalize performance scores by April 30.
  • Managers conduct performance review meetings with employees in May.
  • The merit process will begin in May and include performance evaluation information for reference in allocating merit.
  • Employee data changes (i.e. position reclassifications, changes in pay, changes in FTE) for merit-eligible employees will not be allowed during a data freeze beginning May 10 and ending June 14.
  • Employees who receive a pay increase between December 15, 2019 and March 1, 2020 will be eligible for a prorated merit increase, including those promoted during the January 1 promotion period. Further details regarding the upcoming July 1 promotion period, in alignment with the merit process, will be provided in the near future.
  • Managers (or designee in case of academic year supervisors) meet with employees to communicate the merit increase earned – based on the May performance review meeting – between June 13 and June 30.
  • Merit increases go into effect on July 1.

Based on feedback received, we will be evaluating changes to the performance management and merit calendar for FY21. Thank you for your continued support of Purdue’s performance management and merit process.
