The Purdue Black Caucus of Faculty & Staff shares the pain and concerns of our university and broader local community in response to the recent confrontation between a Purdue University Black undergraduate student and a campus police officer on campus. As our understanding of this one event evolves, the Caucus reaffirms its broad, deep, and ongoing commitment to addressing the full range of needs, concerns, and interests of our staff, faculty, and students.
As it has for nearly five decades, the Caucus stands for safe, respectful, and productive engagement among all segments of our campus community. We work to recognize the contributions of our members and friends, and the Caucus has been a unique voice advocating for their concerns—especially our students. In the strongest possible terms, the Caucus calls for addressing this incident promptly with equity, thoroughness, transparency, and accountability
Our Purdue Black Caucus urges the University community as a whole to listen, collaborate, and work intentionally to promote the belonging and trust this has threatened for so many. Such a commitment is essential for all of us—and for each of us.
Please monitor the Caucus website and our other communications for opportunities to plan and gather, on this and our other concerns, now and throughout the semester.

The Purdue Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff celebrates Dean Natasha T. Duncan, winner of the 2021 Murphy Award!
Natasha T. Duncan, Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Dean for International Education and Affairs for the Honors College, was announced March 16, 2021 as one of five winners of Purdue’s highest honor for undergraduate instruction!
Dr. Duncan is only the 3rd African American professor to earn this honor, and the first Black woman. The Murphy Award (formally, the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Awards in Memory of Charles B. Murphy) is presented every year to a handful of Purdue’s roughly 1,800 professors, on the basis of excellence recognized by students, faculty colleagues, and a selection committee drawn from around the university. Dr. Duncan’s outstanding teaching contributions center on cross-cultural and global economic and political awareness; these enliven both her classroom teaching (including many new courses she created for the Honors College) and in special field opportunities for students (including to US-Mexico border, and other study-abroad experiences). Outside of the classroom, Dr. Duncan is recognized for high-level student mentorship, and for providing training for other faculty and staff on incorporating intercultural learning into their own teaching.
The Murphy Award will be presented formally in University ceremonies later in the year. Story found here: https://purduenews.exposure.co/celebrating-teaching-excellence.
Congratulations, Dr. Duncan!

Purdue University's Ever True Campaign
Event
In the wake of national protests regarding the lack of indictments following the killing of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, Purdue University’s African American Studies and Research Center, American Studies Program, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program must acknowledge our solidarity with peaceful protestors across the country who insist that black lives matter. As faculty, we have heard the anguish of students who are overwhelmed by the state of a society that kills its own citizens with impunity. We must harness our research regarding racism, sexism, and police profiling, so that we can all feel safe walking the streets and approaching the police. As scholars and educators who put our research and teaching at the service of justice, we join with anti-racist, feminist, and human rights activists throughout this country in condemning the use of state forces to prey on black people rather than to protect their liberty and their very lives. As members of the greater Lafayette community, we cannot simply provide intellectual commentary on matters that are affecting our families, friends, and students. We call on political leaders and those with influence over the criminal justice system to stop hiding behind arcane procedural issues and to step forward with bold solutions to end police violence against black people. If the grand jury system is broken, we demand it be fixed. If the police cannot police themselves, we demand they be held accountable and re-trained. The situation will not stand and we will not stand for it.
