Purdue names new chief of the Purdue University Police Department

Purdue University announced Friday (Aug. 26) that Deputy Chief Lesley Wiete will be the new chief of the Purdue University Police Department. Wiete was chosen after a national search, launched in May, to screen and recommend well-qualified candidates to Jay Wasson, vice president and chief public safety officer, to whom the chief of police reports.

James and Tracy Ly Scott juggled work, school and home lives as they progressed toward bachelor’s degrees from Purdue Global. Fittingly, the couple crossed the stage together to accept their diplomas at commencement.

Rocks on Mars

The sands of Mars are green as well as red, rover Perseverance discovers

Mars isn’t just covered with red rocks – it also features green sand. In Jezero Crater, the rover Perseverance is helping planetary geologists study Mars. In one area what they thought were sedimentary rocks turned out, upon closer study, to be igneous or volcanic in nature. Specifically, they are composed of large grains of olivine, the muddier less-gemlike version of peridot that tints so many of Hawaii’s beaches dark green.

The new episode of “This Is Purdue” features Boilermakers who are part of the Purdue Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) student organization. Each year, Purdue students design and build custom race cars and then compete against hundreds of other universities from around the world as part of SAE’s Collegiate Design Series.
