Recipients named for 2019 Purdue Online Excellence Awards

Purdue Online and the Office of the Provost have announced the recipients of the 2019 Purdue Online Excellence Awards. The awards are intended to recognize professional accomplishment and to promote creative and effective approaches to learning delivered via digital education media.

Giant Leaps Research: Heather Servaty-Seib

It was April 1999 when the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado shocked a nation. Video of students desperately sprinting from the school to safety under the watch of armed police flooded televisions across the nation. Images from such events and thoughts of the people who died can trigger strong emotions for people to deal with, whether it’s two decades ago or 14 months ago, when the Stoneman Douglas High School shootings took place in Parkland, Florida.

New protein for gene
editing may improve
disease treatment, crops

Gene editing has been a much sought after and controversial technology. Last month, part of the World Health Organization called for an international registry to track all research into editing the human genome. Purdue researchers, including one who was inspired by the cancer death of a close friend, have developed a new technology that could change how gene editing is approached in the future.

Eighty percent of cardiovascular deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. In countries such as Kenya and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa, financial and mobility constraints often limit rural patients’ access to the much-needed health care services. Purdue researchers have developed a model to help meet the medical and financial needs of families in the rural parts of Kenya.
