Laura Bofferding is on a quest to understand how young children learn mathematics -- and how those insights might lead to more effective ways to teach.
Bofferding, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, is looking at whether introducing children to negative numbers at a young age helps them better understand number and operations concepts that support students' understanding of more complicated mathematical concepts later in their education. She recently received a 2013-14 National Academy of Education/ Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship to support research on that topic.

If adverse weather conditions necessitate that a wind chill, snow or ice emergency be declared for the West Lafayette campus, special procedures pertaining to classes, operations, parking, pay and/or attendance will become effective. Participating in one of Purdue's two 2014 high-deductible medical plans qualifies employees for a health savings account (HSA), but IRS rules may cause an employee to be ineligible for an HSA or affect the tax status of the employee's account.

Purdue's 2013 United Way campaign is looking for a rush in participation to help it reach its goal of $750,000. Purdue campaign leaders hope to reach this year's goal by Wednesday (Nov. 13), but donations toward the 2013 campaign will be accepted through Nov. 18.
Purdue's new IT Security Operations Center aims to head off computer security incidents before they happen.
A new program sponsored by the Purdue Teaching Academy to help prepare graduate students to teach and recognize their professional development efforts will be launched with an informational meeting at 11 a.m. Friday (Nov. 15) in the Hall of Discovery and Learning Research, Room 131.
People
Richard Buckius, vice president for research, will testify Wednesday morning (Nov. 13) in Washington before a congressional panel reviewing a bill to require new criteria for experiments funded by the National Science Foundation.
Brent Drake has been named Purdue's chief data officer and will oversee University efforts to analyze and disseminate data for the most effective decision making and measurement of institutional excellence.
General news
Purdue continues to have the second-largest international student population among U.S. public universities and is third overall, according to a report released Monday (Nov. 11) by the Institute of International Education.
The Purdue community is being invited to join the family of the late Felix Haas, Purdue provost and professor emeritus, as they celebrate his life at a public service on Saturday (Nov. 16), according to the Office of the Board of Trustees. Haas, 92, died on July 16.
Thanks to a one-year, $2.4 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue will continue its mission to improve the lives of members of the military, veterans and their families.
This past weekend (Nov. 9-10), more than 2,000 students danced for 18 hours straight as part of the Purdue University Dance marathon, held at the Córdova Recreational Sports Center. The event raised more than $1 million for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The money will benefit the hospital, its cancer research fund and Camp Riley, which provides specialized activities and enrichment for children with physical disabilities. A Purdue historian is part of a new documentary tracing the final 48 hours of Lee Harvey Oswald that will air for the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination.

Purdue researchers have eliminated the native infection preferences of a Sindbis virus engineered to target and kill cancer cells, a milestone in the manipulation of this promising viral vector.
