2 Purdue professors elected to National Academy of Engineering

The National Academy of Engineering has elected two Purdue engineering professors into its society.

Kumares Sinha, the Edgar B. and Hedwig M. Olson Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, and Andrew M. Weiner, the Scifres Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, are among the 65 new members and nine foreign associates elected to the academy this year. More

-- Melissa Dark, professor of computer and information technology and assistant dean in the College of Technology, has received a Faculty Fellowship for Study in a Second Discipline for the fall 2008 semester. More

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Purdue advances engineering wing, athletic complex, Calumet housing, energy efforts

The Purdue Board of Ttrustees on Friday (Feb. 8) approved financing and construction of a new energy-efficient addition to the School of Mechanical Engineering Building and granted authority to plan a new athletic complex.

The board also approved a construction contract for a new residence hall at Purdue Calumet, energy conservation work in three buildings and a lease for Lafayette Aviation. More

Trustees OK IUPUI motorsports program, honor professor, ratify administrator, name change

The Purdue Board of Trustees on Friday (Feb. 8) ratified a bachelor's degree program in motorsports engineering at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Trustees also approved the appointment of Bruce R. Hamaker as the Roy Whistler Chair in Carbohydrate Science in the Department of Food Science and the appointment of Lawrence M. Barrett as the vice chancellor for student services and enrollment management at Purdue North Central. More

Purdue cancer research, Science Bound receive $2.5 million injection from alumni gift

Peter and Sally Kay
A $2.5 million deferred gift from a Purdue alumnus and his wife will help to arm researchers in the fight against cancer and also support the University's Science Bound program.

A $2 million gift from Peter and Sally Kay of Cincinnati will create an endowed professorship in clinical cancer research. Another $500,000 will support the university's mentorship and scholarships for students in Indianapolis Public Schools. More

Author, leadership consultant to speak about businesswomen at Purdue

Rebecca Shambaugh
Rebecca Shambaugh, a nationally recognized leadership consultant and author, will speak about women in the workplace during a lecture today (Feb. 11) at Purdue.

Shambaugh, who earned a bachelor's degree in communication from Purdue's College of Liberal Arts in 1978, will speak at 3:30 p.m. in Discovery Park's Burton D. Morgan Center, Room 121. The lecture is sponsored by the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence and the College of Liberal Arts. More

Purdue's presidential inaugural to feature Global University Convocation

Purdue's presidential inauguration events in April will feature leaders of academia and government from around the world in a convocation focusing on the concept of the global university.

C-SPAN President and CEO Brian Lamb, a Purdue alumnus, will moderate the convocation, which will be held 2:30-4:30 p.m. April 10 in Loeb Playhouse. At least seven panelists from four continents will form the discussion group. A symposium of Purdue faculty also is being planned for April 11 around selected interdisciplinary topics. Both of those events will be open to the public. The inauguration ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. April 11 in Elliott Hall of Music. More

Poetry event at Black Cultural Center to honor women

Poems about women is the theme of a Project Respect collaboration between Purdue's Black Cultural Center and the Women's Resource Office on Feb. 22.

Poets from the campus community will share poems about women's talents, abilities, experiences, dreams, vision and art beyond the boundaries of race, class and sexual orientation at "Women's Art, Women's Vision, Women's Dreams ... A Womanist Poetry Event!" Free and open to the public, it will be at 7 p.m. in the BCC Multipurpose Room. More
